We live in a day when many are claiming signs, and wonders which they  attribute to God. Often those making the claim give no serious regard to the Scripture but others attempt to justify their claims by twisting Scripture and taking it out of its context.

All such claims must be tested against the plumbline of the Word of God.  Isaiah wrote:

When they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto  wizards that  peep, and  that  mutter: should not  a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To  the  law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them (Isaiah 8:19-20).

Claims that signs and wonders are the work of God without a sound Biblical basis are false because God has said:

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets (Amos 3:7).

Unless a sign is forecast prophetically it has no significance. Likewise unless a clear match can be made between prophecies and their fulfilment they cannot be claimed to be a fulfilment. Sir Robert Anderson QC in his book, The Silence of God Ch. 4 illustrates: “An agent is sent upon some mission of secrecy and danger. A messenger will follow later with new and full instructions for his guidance. The messenger is described to him, but the agent’s sense of the peril of his position makes him plead that the messenger have adequate identification. A piece of paper is torn in two and one half is handed to the agent; the other half is to be given to the messenger. No document, however elaborate, would give surer proof of his identity than would that torn piece of paper. Only when the two matching pieces of paper are brought together can the agent be sure of the bonafides of the messenger. Thus we see in what sense, and how certainly and simply, “external evidence” may avail “to accredit a revelation.”

Peter wrote:

No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation (2 Peter 1:20).

It is imperative that we know the Scriptures so that we can accurately match what God has foretold with its fulfilment, should it occur in our time. Signs that do not perfectly match prophecy are false.
